Street Experiments for Smart Urban Mobility
In creating the most liveable city, the design of the street is one of the major areas that municipalities must pay great attention to. Many cities started to experiment on parts or blocks of a street to formulate the best design framework for improving the quality of the inhabitants’ lives. Bertolini (2020) explained five criteria that the city needs to fulfill to create successful city street experiments.
First, the street experiments should be radical, that is fundamentally different from dominant practice. Next it must be driven for long term change that addresses societal challenges. The experiments also need to be feasible with the available resources. Then, the city street experiments should be strategic, with clear ways to generate lessons that city agents and stakeholders can learn from. Lastly, it has to be communicative so that the broader public are aware of it and change can be mobilised on a greater scale.
