Smart Sustainable Energy from Urban Solar Singapore
The limitation of land area pushes Singapore to think innovatively in its efforts for sustainable energy provision. As a city-nation that is located on the equator with all year-round sunshine, Singapore is pushing solar technology as one of its sustainable energy sources. Lack of space in its urban area forces Singapore to experiment in installing solar panels on building rooftops, building facades etc. In 2016, the city-nation even experimented with a floating photovoltaic testbed located in one of the city’s reservoirs, which is the largest worldwide. With the data collected from the solar panel sensors, Singapore continually researches to create new solutions of high efficiency, light-weight solar technologies; all to achieve the target of having a 2-gigawatt peak of installed urban solar capacity by 2030. This journey of solar technologies also benefits from the Singapore financing ecosystem that allows innovation that explore various ways to finance the solar project.
