E-Waste Collection with IoT

The collection and management of e-waste is crucial to reduce the amount of toxic material released to our environment. Effective waste management also has a potential to retrieve valuable materials to be reused and recycled such as gold and copper. Kang et al. (2021) proposed a smart e-waste collection system that could be applicable at household level in the city.

A specified collection point as simple as a box can be installed in a residential area where the residents can dispose their e-waste. The box or collection point are equipped with a sensor that can notify the collection company to collect the e-waste. A mobile application was also developed for residents to register their waste and support the identification of type of waste. To simplify and make this system more accessible to resident, Kang et al. (2021) also suggests to integrate this system to the existing recycling collection, thus reducing the barrier to participation for the people that are more familiar with the existing system.
