Compact City for Quality of Life
The idea of compact cities claims to provide people with everything they need within the community, from stores, schools, employment, public service, and other amenities in a densely built urban area. However, this concept received many critics to how much they contribute to the environmental, social, and economic benefit to the community. Bibri (2020) explains the design strategies that could city government should be mindful of.
Compact city should build a denser urban form by not only providing more space for people to live or making land use more efficient, but also intensifying the kinds of activities and mixing greater use of the land. This means that land use in cities should have the diversity and proximity of service & infrastructure with a form of cross-sectional residential, commercial, institutional, and cultural use associated with living and working. This density needs to also be supported by a sustainable transportation system that balances mobility, safety, and accessibility for everyone.
Nonetheless, Bibri noted that the complex and unpredictable nature of urban problems requires city government to establish an environment that enables multiple disciplines with relevant practical expertise to work together while embracing the ICT embedded in smart cities.
