Berlin, Smartest City in Europe
Berlin has been ranked as the top smart city in Europe byJuniper Research, followed by London, Barcelona, Rome, and Madrid. The ranking is based on the city's focus on enhancing traditional systems through digital solutions for the benefit of its residents and businesses. Juniper defines a smart city as one where digital solutions improve traditional networks and services for the benefit of residents and businesses, encompassing areas like transport, water supply, waste disposal, and energy efficiency. The analysis covered various aspects including transportation, energy, city management, technology, and connectivity.
Berlin's leading position is attributed to its efforts in improving transportation infrastructure, exemplified by the mobility as a service (MaaS) app Jelbi, which integrates public and private transport. The city has also shown dedication to shared micro mobility and renewable energy generation, showcasing a holistic approach to smart city development.
Juniper Research underscores the promising potential of smart technology to enhance quality of life and decrease the environmental impact of cities. The analysis forecasts a growth of 53% in CO2emissions saved by smart city initiatives in Europe, reaching 247 million metric tons by 2028. Smart grids, powered by elements like AI analytics and demand-responsive networks, are expected to be a major contributor to these savings. Smart street lighting and traffic management systems are also anticipated to contribute significantly.
