Barriers to Smart City Development
Razmjoo et al. (2021) believe that implementation of Smart City not only minimise the challenges that massive urbanisation imposes but also promotes urban development that are also sustainable. Through studying the transportation and energy system in the city, the study found 5 categories of barriers that every city should investigate to accelerate the development of their smart city, which are, Governance (G), Social (S), Technology (T), Environmental (Env) and Economic (Ec).
Key barriers such as weak IT management (G), improper policy & regulation norms (G), poor interaction between local government & citizen (S), old technology (T), weak IT network & infrastructure (T), lack of attention & interest of clean energy (Env), and lack of plans to attract foreign investment (Ec) are just some examples of common barriers that local government could detect through evaluating the city’s smart city implementation. Identifying the problem is a vital step towards providing with relevant policy intervention to the Smart City development.
